A significant percentage of the human body is water, which includes intracellular and extracellular fluids. On average, body water can account for 50% of the total human body weight and it is significantly higher in newborns. Obesity decreases the percentage of water in the body. Body water is regulated by hormones, including anti-diuretic. Fluids of the body can be intracellular or extracellular, with about 55% of the water being intracellular and about 45% being extracellular. Extracellular fluid can be further divided into interstitial fluid, transcellular fluids in various body cavities, and plasma.
